Hailing from Cabarita on the far north coast of NSW, Joel Ford has spent the better part of his life in and around the ocean.
The early days consisted of a healthy mix of surfing and surf life saving, until at 12 years of age the paddle board was retired and surfing took over completely.
Getting stuck into the competition scene from that point on Joel began to do quite well in the junior ranks. But after several years, he realised that the increasing pressure to win heats was beginning to sap him of the basic joys that drew him to surfing in the first place.
Fortunately for Joel he had exceptional mentors in his father, and older brothers Ryland and Sam Ford. Joel was also fortunate enough to call Chippa Wilson a good friend and neighbour, and with the support of these friends and family Joel made the decision to switch his focus to free surfing and going big!
Just as he was then, Joel is still heavily inspired by Chippa's creativity and focus on keeping things fun both in and out of the water. We could go on about the similarities in commitment and trickery, but take 25 seconds out of your day to watch some of Joel's surfing and you will soon draw your own conclusions!
Fast forward 9 years from Joel making the decision that surfing was all that he wanted to do, and at 21 years of age surfing is still all that he wants to do!
