It’s that time of year again, folks. It’s the season of giving, and there’s perhaps no better way to spend this wonderful time than on the North Shore of Oahu. In 2 Kooks in Hawaii, Kalani Robb and Tyler Stanaland get extra benevolent and hand out a few Catch Surf shred sleds to all the good children of the North Shore. But not before they have a little fun of their own.

A HUGE congratulations to West Oz charger and Adelio team rider Chris Ross for taking out the 'Biggest Slab' category of the 2014/2015 Oakley Big Wave Awards! The Award couldn't have gone to a more deserving man. Well done Crossy!
“This is Chris Ross, a carpenter from Margaret River, on the first successfully ridden wave of the morning. Rossy, who’ll often surf out here with just his tow partner and no cameras around, is a standout local at the forefront of riding big slabs in WA.”

Two days ago a crazy slab session went down off the coast of Australia. The right as it's known to locals is without question one of the heaviest waves in the world. West Australian photographer Russell Ord was there with the big wave charger Chris Ross, both sharing the line up with Mark Mathews and Dean Morrison. A session here seldom goes down without a hitch as Ordy recounts the days events.

Evan Geiselman speaks for the first time about the Pipeline drainer that nearly took his life a few weeks ago. This is another great piece by Mr Ryan Moss that sheds light on the tight-nit surf community and Ev’s brush with darkness. Through it all, the safety of our fellows is the ultimate concern and overshadows sponsors, competition, world titles and double-taps. Huge props to Evan for being so raw and real in the interview. There’s no machismo when someone nearly dies: Only gratitude for a second swing.

When Michael Dyrland traveled to Los Angeles in October 2014 to photograph an old friend, he was excited about trying his hand at surfing in Venice Beach. But after a night of heavy rain, he was shocked to discover that they couldn’t paddle out because of runoff contamination.
“When I woke up the following morning, I asked my friend when we could go out and he said ‘Are you crazy? No one goes in the water after it rains. You could get MRSA, hep C, virus, respiratory infection, etc,'” Dyrland wrote on the website Bored Panda. “I was shocked. Because it rains so infrequently in L.A., all the sewage, garbage, oil and [fecal matter] runs right down the streets into the sand and the ocean.”
Dyrland was so bothered by his inability to surf, that he decided to put his photography skills to use and compile a photo series titled “HAZMAT Surfing,” which envisions what surfing might look like 25 years from now if ocean health continues to worsen.

Recently Adelio contributor Imogen Caldwell from the remote West Oz ventured to the islands of barrels in the Mentawais with south coast photographer Ray Collins.

The Indian Ocean's swell of the century hit Western Australia and absolutely blew up infamous location 'The Right'. The photos went everywhere. No corner of the Internet left unturned. Lots of "best ever" claims, but none the less a very, very big day at WA's favourite death slab.
As the beaches become more and more crowded and the seas become polluted, is this the future of surfing? Let's hope not!

Bitta this n that all thrown into a basket and served out for nothin but a good time
It has been almost a year since Jay Adams left us. He passed August 15, 2014. He carved away from the sun. He didn’t look back. We don’t know why… The finality of someone leaving us is difficult to grasp. The void. Jay Adams was a remarkable light in the world. I was searching through my computer files this past winter. I was looking for something that Jay had sent to me for use in the William Sharp book – Back in the Day. I found an email from Jay and it was dated September 3, 2012. It was a story that he had written to me about his early skateboard experiences in pools. I was shocked, as I couldn’t remember reading it before. I am unsure why I didn’t recall the email or if I was saving it… Maybe I was supposed to save it for now. Is Jay smiling down on us? Maybe it was meant to be. Whatever the reasons, I decided that today would be a good day to send it out into the world. I rewrote it exactly the way Jay sent it to me. It is Jay Adams. All of him. R.I.P. Jayboy. – Ozzie

Just before I was boarding my flight I decided to check my emails to see if there were any last minute instructions for what to do when I land. Where to pick the camper van up from and whatever else needed to happen.
My inbox was full of emails from Ricardo and Owey. "we need to talk to you brother!! ASAP", "We can't get a van, there are none available", "call us!!!!", "There are other guys here so I might just jump in with them" Ricardo's message says.
What the f**k am I gona do? I've never been to Gisborne in my life.
We were five hours from Ricardo's place. I woke up to the sound of rolling ball bearings signalling that somebody had opened the sliding door then, the thud echoed through my pillow which was sitting on the van floor, somebody just got out of the car. It was pitch black with a small glimpse of daylight peering through beyond my feet from the front of the car. The wheel hub sits ridged into one side of me through the mattress and the bubble wrap and rails of six surfboards(the other six were across the front seat) padded with towels, jackets and whatever we can find sit snug on the other. The false floor sits some ten inches from my face, I feel cosy and warm......

Photography has always been a massive part of my life. My parents have draws full of photographs, slides and old movies, they were the original hipsters, my dad even has a beard and an extensive vinyl collection. I’d borrow beardys camera all the time until I could afford my own. It would go with me everywhere, family gatherings, road trips, sessions on the Espy.
What Youth and Adidas presents 'New Scenery, New Noise', a new film featuring skating, surfing and snowboarding in the all day light of Sweden and Norway.
The Noosa Festival Of Surfing ran this year for the 23rd time, once again the surf was…. perfect. These legendary points are as fickle as the super bank is consistent. Needing a solid swell to penetrate deep into the contest site things weren't looking good with one of the slowest cyclone seasons on record. Seeing as though the only things i've been surfing lately is the couch/net i packed the van and headed a little north.

The term fun beachy gets thrown around a fair bit on the Sunshine Coast, especially by a frother such as Josh Constable. So when I got the call from Josh telling me about this ‘super fun’ little peak at his local I was a bit dubious to say the least, but the moment he said he had a few new board models he’d been working on (Creative Army surfboards) it was an offer hard to turn down.

R.I.P Ricardo dos Santos
In a devastating turn of events this week, Brazilian charger Ricardo dos Santos has died after being shot multiple times near his beachside home in the country's south.
Accounts vary on the lead up to this tragic event, but according to news reports a 25 year old off duty soldier has been arrested by military police in relation to the incident.
Despite desperate attempts to save the young surfers life, dos Santos succumbed to his injuries just a day after being flown to St Regis Regional Hospital in Santa Catarina with critical injuries.
Our thoughts go out to Ricardo’s friends and family at this incredibly sad time.
Well the day has come and gone!

SOUTH COAST SURF CHASERS
78 years (deceased 2014)
Jim Miller was one of the pioneers of stand-up surfboard riding in SA, and was the designer/builder of the original Surf Chaser car.
A member of the Henley Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, Jim moved to Chiton Rocks in 1958-59 when the first local surfers started riding Malibu longboards introduced by the Americans in 1956.
Other riders of the time were John Arnold, Peter Smith, Johnny Brown, Ray Jones and Don Burford.
Jim and Peter Smith bought an 1934 Ford V8, and Jim designed a multiple board rack and they called themselves the ‘’South Coast Surf Chasers”.
“We had the first surf chaser back in 1958 and I just got the idea we’d use that for around the south coast beaches.
I just made up these racks so we could slide the boards in on an angle, you don’t have to tie anything down, and we’d go all around Victor Harbor, Waitpinga and Parsons and down the river mouth at Goolwa.
We were well known, and everyone else thought damn this we are going to do the same thing, so they all got all these old bombs, and then it went on and on.”
In the early 60’s the Surf Chasers would park at the top of the Seaford ramp and the surfers would decide whether to surf the Mid Coast breaks or head to the South Coast.
Later they would venture west to Yorke Peninsula and Cactus.
“Going to Yorke’s we upgraded the surf chaser and got a Land Rover. We were the only ones with a Land Rover with racks on.
We used to leave it at Stenhouse Bay so we would just drive our cars there from Adelaide and get into the Land Rover and drive right to the surf.
Everybody else had to walk across the sandhills carrying their heavy boards.”
An American surf magazine had a contest to see how many surfers you could get into one vehicle, and Jim managed to cram 30 people into his Ford surf chaser but that wasn’t enough to win. The record went to a bunch of Californians.
“The old Ford got to the stage where she give up the ghost a bit, so we took her to the rubbish tip at Victor Harbor and drove it in there.
Everyone was throwing rotten eggs at us, ha, ha, we gave her a good burial you know…”
And then there was the discovery of Cactus.
“We were among the first group that went there. I think Donny Burford was in the group and he was actually the first person to paddle out at Cactus Beach.”
“It was primitive, there was plenty of fish around especially down Cactus way at Point Sinclair we’d go fishing and do all that sort of thing.
There were some days at Cactus beach it was that hot you had to get under the cliffs there at Caves and just keep cool until the tide came in.”
So what’s it like to be a surf legend ?
“I enjoy going back there because everybody appreciates you when you’ve been there and done a lot of things.
And all the old surfers, some of them around 60 or something but they are still surfing.
I go down to Cactus and they treat me really well.
It’s just a good fraternity, brotherhood sorta thing, and it’s a nice feeling.”
(Jim Miller was interviewed by Chris Warren in March 2013)

They’re that little bit stretchier thanks to the shedding of a little rubber, and having the arms free feels liberating making you look like you surf just that little bit better than you do. Strange, but true.

Tune in to watch some of the raddest skating going down at the Vans Invitational at Huntington Beach.
As the Australian summer nears a close, the BOWL-A-RAMA bandwagon rolls into town for another year. The event has become a permanent fixture on the Australian skateboarding calendar, and while most of us probably don’t give a toss about Bucky Lasek or Alex Sorgente for most of the year, it’s fair to say that even the most avid “core” skateboarder feels a little excited when they see the unbelievable level of skill on display at Bondi. This year brought with it more chaos than ever, and some of the gnarliest runs and heaviest slams in the contest’s 11-year history went down over the weekend. It’s safe to say that this was the best Vans BOWL-A-RAMA Bondi I’ve ever witnessed, for a number of reasons
